What a great post. I'm sure it's annoying to have to go in to Soren so frequently, but when he says such funny things it must take the edge off. And that certainly is a spectacular helicopter. I like the action-dots all around it.

I've learned a lot from Twain on sounding out words (of course, he's learned it at school: he didn't figure it out on his own). What sometimes throws him off is how a vowel is pronounced since they are so variable. Here are 2 rules that help us. If there is an "e" at the end of a word, the "e" tells the vowel to say its name. Example: save. The other is my favorite, "if two vowels go walkin' the first one does the talkin. Example: boat.

You really notice when you are sounding out words with a child how irregular English is don't you?

I've been trying to think of good valentines that Twain can make for school too. Since he attends two schools (one in B'ham and one in Canada) we have to do enough for 2 classes. I'm thinking of doing hearts and then buying glowsticks (15 for $1 at Target) and pushing them through the hearts and then having him write, "you make my heart glow." But, if I have extra glowsticks, I love the idea of a glowstick bath! Did you know that you can put them in the freezer and it sometimes helps them last a second night?

I was in Palo Alto in the Loma Prieta Quake, and have sometimes wondered what I will tell my daughter about it. I've also wondered what I would tell her about earthquakes if I still lived in the Bay Area... I don't envy you that. One possibility would be to talk about some of the positive things that happen when bad things happen -- like people coming together to help each other. And Ronin is right that it really is like camping (at least it was in 89).

So glad that Ronin is OK. Oh my god.
